Symbol/Chart Explanation:
The chart is worked with the odd rows going from right to left and the even rows from left to right. You read the symbols as charted.

Inc (increase): To increase, I lifted the bar or ladder between the two stitches, from front to back, and knitted as usual. This gives a nice increase, without a hole. If you do not like this method of increasing, then pick what you prefer.

Note: On all even rows, knit the first and the last stitch, to keep the edges from curling. I put an *, marking where the pattern stitch starts. This will help you when your get into multiple repeats of the stitch pattern.

Wide Triangular Shawl Pattern


Set up:
Cast on 5 sts.

Row 1: K1, inc, k3, inc, k1.
Row 2: K1, purl across to the last stitch, k1.
Row 3: K1, inc, knit across to the last st, inc, k1.
Row 4: K1, inc, purl across to the last stitch, inc, k1.

Pattern:


Row 5: K1, inc, k1, *k1, yo, p1, p3tog, p1, yo,* k2, inc, k1.
Row 6: K1, inc, p3, *k1, p3, k1, p1*, p2, inc, k1.
Row 7: K1, inc, knit across to the last st, inc, k1.
Row 8: K1, inc, purl across to the last stitch, inc, k1.
Row 9: K1, inc, yo, p1, p3tog, p1, yo, *k1, yo, p1, p3tog, p1, yo* across, ending inc, k1.
Row 10: K1, inc, p1, *k1, p3, k1, p1* across, ending inc, k1.
Row 11: K1, inc, knit across to the last st, inc, k1.
Row 12: K1, inc, purl across to the last stitch, inc, k1.
Row 13: K1, inc, p2tog, p1, yo, *k1, yo, p1, p3tog, p1, yo* across, ending k1, yo, p1, p2tog, inc, k1.
Row 14: K1, inc, p3, k1, p1, *k1, p3, k1, p1* across, ending k1, p3, inc, k1.
Row 15: K1, inc, knit across, ending inc, k1.
Row 16: K1, inc, purl across, ending inc, k1.

Repeat Rows 7 through 16, until the shawl is the size you prefer. Cast off and block if you wish this to be a wide triangular shawl. Continue with the next part if you wish to make a square-shaped shawl.


Square Shawl Pattern


Do the shawl pattern above. When you reach the size/width you wish, do the decrease rows:

Decrease Row 1: K1, ssk, *k1, yo, p1, p3tog, p1, yo* across, ending k1, k2otg, k1.
Row 2: K1, k2tog, *k1, p3, k1, p1* across, ending k1, p3, k1, ssk, k1.
Row 3: K1, ssk, knit across, ending k2tog, k1.
Row 4: K1, k2tog, purl across, ending ssk, k1.
Row 5: K1, ssk, p1, k1, *k1, yo, p1, p3tog, p1, yo* across, ending k2, p1, k2tog, k1.
Row 6: K1, k2tog, p2, *k1, p3, k1, p1* across, ending p1, ssk, k1.
Row 7: K1, ssk, knit across, ending k2tog, k1.
Row 8: K1, k2tog, purl across, ending ssk, k1.
Row 9: K1, ssk, p1, p2tog, p1, yo, *k1, yo, p1, p3tog, p1, yo* across, ending k1, yo, p1, p2tog, p1, k2tog, k1.
Row 10: k1, k2tog, p2, k1, p1, *k1, p3, k1, p1* across, ending k1, p2, ssk, k1.
Row 11: K1, ssk, knit across, ending k2tog, k1.
Row 12: K1, k2tog, purl across, ending ssk, k1.

Last Rows:
